When to scale your online course business

scaling Nov 11, 2022

Many of us have been walking a path that we aren’t ready for yet. It’s not because we don’t know what we’re doing, most likely it’s because we are following the wrong people at the wrong time in our journey.

I’ve walked this path solidly for the past couple years. The “sexy” side of the online business is that hundreds of thousands of dollars or millions can be made in one single launch. And this is a true thing that DOES happen. However, it only works for those of us who are already at a certain stage in our business. Not everyone, not by a long shot.

Let’s be honest, if it were this easy, we’d all be millionaires right now. If we could all follow one singular formula that guarantees millions, then you wouldn’t read this.

It doesn’t exist. Yep, I said it. There’s no “magic pill” that will turn your business into a machine overnight.

The intangible components that we all bring to the table change the outcome that we all create. Even if we have the same niche and write the same kind of messaging, there’s still a set of experiences that we each bring to the table that will change our results.

This doesn’t mean you can’t get there and you can’t scale. Just that there’s a time and a place to make this happen. If you don’t have clients and never have had clients in your “field of expertise”, you aren’t ready to scale. It’s that simple. You just need clients!

What this means is that if you are pumping money into ads for BIG launches but haven’t had clients, you’re probably not going to succeed just yet. Sorry to say it. I had to accept this after spending nearly $34,000 on ads over the past 2 years. I knew my subject, and I knew how to teach it, but I hadn’t spent time teaching it yet (so did I really know how to teach to a large audience?).

Step by step scaling

There are steps in creating a business and an evolution to the process. Sometimes we see someone who seemingly skips all the steps and makes things happen overnight. The truth of that story is that they had the years of selling expertise necessary to make this happen.

All of this being said, the key takeaway here is that we need to understand which stage of business we are in. Are we ready to run ads right now? Have we worked with clients yet? Are we TRULY experts in our field?

Once we know where we are, we can make the right decisions. These decisions are determined by what we need MOST at the moment. If you are just starting out and NEED to make money, then don’t pump a bunch of money into ads, that’s like gambling..

If you already have a good income stream and things are moving along nicely, then it’s time to figure out how to scale - possibly hiring employees, running ads, building a more advanced funnel, etc..

So which stage are you in?
